Psalms 140:6
I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.
Psalms 140:6 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 140 is a lament attributed to King David. He faces enemies who plot evil and speak against him. In this verse, David turns directly to God with a personal declaration and a plea for help. His words show that he sees the Lord as his only deliverer in danger.
Meaning
David begins with a firm statement: “I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God.” This is not a casual remark. It is a deliberate confession of faith. By calling God “my God,” David claims a personal and covenant relationship with Him. He is not speaking about a distant deity. He is addressing the One who has chosen him and whom he serves.
The second part of the verse is a request: “hear the voice of my supplications.” The word “supplications” means earnest, humble requests made in prayer. David does not demand help. He asks God to listen to his cries for mercy and deliverance. This shows both his need and his trust. He believes that God is attentive to the prayers of His people and able to respond.
David also addresses God as “O LORD.” This name points to God’s authority and faithfulness. By using it, David acknowledges that the Lord is the source of his strength, protection, and salvation. In the middle of trouble, he looks upward, not inward.
Biblical connections
David’s confidence in God’s attentive care appears throughout the Psalms. In Psalm 34:15, the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry. That connection helps explain why David can pray with such certainty. His plea is not based on his own worth but on God’s character.
Application
This verse teaches us to combine faith and prayer. First, we can declare that God is our God. This means we trust Him personally, not just know about Him. Second, we can bring our needs to Him with humility. Prayer is the way we pour out our hearts and ask for His help. Third, we can depend on His strength rather than our own. When we face difficulties, we can remember that the Lord hears and cares for us.
Reflection
David’s prayer models a heart that is both honest and hopeful. He does not hide his trouble, but he also does not let fear silence his faith. His words invite us to examine our own prayers. Do we speak to God as our God? Do we bring our requests with earnest humility? This verse encourages us to approach the Lord with the same confidence, knowing that He listens to the voice of our supplications.
