Psalms 142:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:12
Listen to this article

“I cried unto thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.”

1. Historical Context:Psalm 142 is attributed to David when he was hiding in a cave, likely referring to the time he was fleeing from King Saul. David was in distress and facing great danger. In this psalm, he pours out his heart to God, seeking refuge and deliverance.

2. Cry unto the Lord:The verse begins with David crying out to the Lord. This indicates his deep desperation and need for help. It is a powerful reminder that when we face challenges and difficulties, our first response should be to turn to God in prayer. David understood that God is the one who can provide the help he needed.

3. God as a Refuge:David acknowledges God as his refuge. A refuge is a place of safety and protection. By recognizing God as his refuge, David expresses his trust in God’s ability to shelter and defend him in times of trouble. This statement demonstrates David’s confidence in God’s character and his reliance on Him for deliverance.

4. God as a Portion:David also declares that God is his portion in the land of the living. In biblical terms, a portion refers to an inheritance or possession. Here, David acknowledges that God Himself is his ultimate portion and inheritance. It means that David finds his satisfaction, fulfilment, and joy in a personal relationship with God. God is not just a means to an end but the ultimate end itself.

5. Application for Believers:Psalm 142:5 encourages us to approach God in times of distress and find our refuge in Him. When faced with challenges, we can cry out to the Lord, knowing that He is our ultimate source of help and safety. This verse reminds us to seek God as our portion, recognising that true fulfilment and satisfaction can only be found in Him. In a world where we often seek satisfaction in material possessions or worldly achievements, this verse calls us to prioritise our relationship with God above all else.
