Psalms 142:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.”

Context:To fully understand the meaning of this verse, it is essential to consider the context in which it was written. Psalm 142 is attributed to David and is known as a “maskil” or contemplative psalm. It was written during a period when David was hiding in a cave, possibly referring to the time he was pursued by King Saul (1 Samuel 22). In this psalm, David pours out his distress and seeks God’s deliverance.

Cry for Help:The verse begins with David’s plea for God to attend to his cry. David is in a desperate situation, feeling brought very low. This verse reflects the depth of David’s anguish and the intensity of his cry for help. It shows that in times of trouble and distress, we can approach God honestly, pouring out our hearts to Him.

Acknowledging Weakness:David acknowledges that his persecutors are stronger than he is. Despite his military prowess and accomplishments, he recognizes his vulnerability in the face of opposition. This acknowledgment reveals David’s humility and dependence on God. It reminds us that we should not rely solely on our own strength but recognize our limitations and turn to God for deliverance.

Deliverance:David seeks deliverance from his persecutors. He understands that only God can provide the help and protection he needs. This verse demonstrates David’s confidence in God’s power and ability to rescue him from his enemies. It encourages us to have faith in God’s deliverance, knowing that He is greater than any opposition we may face.

Application:While Psalm 142:6 has a specific historical context, its themes and lessons are applicable to our lives today. When we find ourselves in challenging circumstances, feeling overwhelmed or oppressed, we can follow David’s example. We should cry out to God, honestly expressing our distress, weaknesses, and need for His intervention. We can trust in His deliverance, knowing that He is more powerful than any obstacle or adversary we encounter.
