Psalms 143:7

Listen to this article

“Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.”

Psalm 143:7 (KJV) says, “Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.”

Understanding the context:Psalm 143 is attributed to King David and is categorized as a psalm of supplication or a prayer for deliverance. In this psalm, David expresses his distress and seeks God’s mercy and guidance in the face of his enemies. Verse 7 is a plea for God’s prompt attention and intervention.

The plea for God’s speedy response:David begins by addressing the Lord, recognizing His authority and sovereignty. He implores God to listen to him swiftly. This indicates David’s urgent need and the depth of his desperation. It shows his desire for immediate help and relief from his situation.

Acknowledging personal weakness:In the second part of the verse, David acknowledges his own weakness, saying, “my spirit faileth.” This can refer to David’s emotional or spiritual exhaustion, his feeling of being overwhelmed, or his sense of inner turmoil. It reveals his vulnerability and dependency on God’s strength and guidance.

The fear of being forsaken:David expresses his fear of God hiding His face from him. In the Bible, the phrase “hiding God’s face” refers to the withdrawal of His presence, favor, or protection. David recognizes the importance of being in a close relationship with God and the dire consequences of feeling abandoned by Him. He fears becoming like those who go down into the pit, symbolizing a state of spiritual and emotional darkness or even death.

  • Urgency in prayer:David’s plea for God to hear him speedily reminds us of the importance of praying with persistence and faith, trusting in God’s timing and response.
  • Honest vulnerability:David’s admission of his own weakness encourages us to come before God with authenticity, acknowledging our limitations and relying on His strength.
  • Dependence on God’s presence:David’s fear of God hiding His face reminds us of the significance of maintaining a close relationship with God. We should seek His presence, knowing that apart from Him, we can do nothing.
