Psalms 144:2

My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

Context

Psalm 144 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving from David, the shepherd-king of Israel. He wrote it after God gave him victory and protection. In this verse, David names several attributes of God that reveal His character and His care for His people.

Meaning

David calls God “my goodness.” This means God is the source and author of all goodness in him. It points to God’s moral excellence, kindness, and faithful love. Some translations render this as “my mercy” or “my lovingkindness,” connecting it to God’s steadfast covenant love.

God is also David’s fortress, a place of refuge and protection. He is a high tower, a secure and elevated place for observation and safety. As deliverer, God rescues David from threats. As shield, God defends him in battle. These military pictures show God as a complete refuge in times of trouble.

David says God is “he in whom I trust.” This protection is accessed through personal faith and reliance on God. David places his complete confidence in God, recognizing Him as reliable, faithful, and worthy of trust.

The final clause, “who subdueth my people under me,” acknowledges God’s sovereignty. David’s rule over Israel is not by his own power but is granted and sustained by God. All success and authority come from God.

David also calls God the God of his mercy in Psalm 59:10 and 59:17. Those passages echo the same trust in God’s steadfast love and protection.

Application
