Psalms 144:2
My goodnes and my fortresse, my high tower and my deliuerer, my shield, and he in whome I trust: who subdueth my people vnder me. Psalms 144:2 (KJV)
Psalm 144 is attributed to David, the shepherd‑king of Israel, and is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving for God’s deliverance and protection. In this verse David names several attributes of God that reveal His character and His care for His people.
Goodness – David acknowledges that God is the source of his goodness, referring to divine moral excellence, kindness, and faithfulness toward His people.
Fortress – God is likened to a fortress, a place of refuge and protection, a stronghold against enemies and difficulties.
High Tower – A high tower provides a secure, elevated position for observation and safety; David sees God as a secure and elevated place of shelter from harm.
Deliverer – God rescues and delivers His people; David recognizes God’s ability to save him from threats and challenges.
Shield – As a defensive weapon in battle, the shield represents God’s protective power, defending David against his enemies.
Trustworthy – David places his complete trust in God, recognizing Him as reliable, faithful, and worthy of confidence.
Subduer – God enables David to subdue his people under him, highlighting God’s power and sovereignty in granting victory.
These attributes invite believers to acknowledge and appreciate the multifaceted nature of God’s character. We can find comfort in His goodness, seek refuge in Him as our fortress and high tower, rely on Him as our deliverer and shield, and place our trust in His faithful reliability.
Like David, we are called to trust God completely. Despite the challenges we face, we can rely on His faithfulness and strength, confident that He will provide, protect, and deliver us.
The psalm also reminds us to express gratitude for God’s deliverance and protection. Reflecting on times when He has intervened in our lives should lead us to thank Him for His goodness and faithfulness.
Overall, Psalm 144:2 encourages us to recognize and cherish God’s attributes, to trust Him as our protector, provider, and deliverer, and to be grateful for His continual interventions in our lives.
