Psalms 147:13

For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee.

Context

Psalm 147 is a song of praise for God’s goodness, power, and tender care, especially as He restores Jerusalem after exile. The verse speaks directly to the city, picturing God as both its defender and its source of life. In the ancient world, a city’s gates were its main entry point and first line of defense. Strong bars meant the city was secure against enemies. When God strengthens the bars, He provides safety and protection for His people. The second half turns inward: God blesses the children within the city. This includes all who live there, not only the young. His blessing brings well-being, peace, and prosperity to the whole community.

Meaning

God’s care is complete: He protects from without and blesses from within. The image of gates and bars shows that God guards His people from external threats. The blessing of children shows His favor and goodness upon the community. Together, these pictures teach that God is both protector and source of internal flourishing. This is not distant or passive care. It is active, personal, and constant. God does not merely watch over His people from afar; He strengthens what is weak and blesses what is within.

Biblical connections

The image of gates also appears in the New Testament. Jesus says in Matthew 16:18 that the gates of hell shall not prevail against His church. Just as God strengthens the gates of Jerusalem, He secures His people spiritually. The gates of Zion can represent the church of God, with gates for entering in through Christ and faith in Him, and bars for security against spiritual enemies. God’s strengthening of these bars assures believers of their utmost safety from sin, law, Satan, the world, death, and hell. Christ is their stronghold, and the Holy Spirit dwells within them, greater than any enemy. This connection shows that God’s protection is both physical and spiritual.

Application

As believers, we are part of the spiritual city of God, the Church. God strengthens the spiritual gates of His Church, guarding His people from sin, Satan, and the world. We can trust that He is on our side and that no external threat can overcome us. At the same time, God blesses us from within, giving us peace, joy, and the assurance of His presence. This should lead us to gratitude and worship, just as the psalm does. When we feel vulnerable, we can remember that He has strengthened our gates. When we feel empty, we can remember that He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.

God’s care is complete: He protects from without and blesses from within. Let us thank Him for His faithfulness and pass on this hope to the next generation, so they too may know His strength and blessing. We can rest in the truth that God is on our side, and His Spirit within us is greater than any enemy.
