Sing vnto the Lord with thankesgiuing: sing prayse vpon the harpe vnto our God: Psalms 147:7 (KJV)

Psalm 147 is a psalm of praise, exalting and glorifying the Lord for His greatness and goodness. It celebrates God’s care for Jerusalem, His power in creating and sustaining all things, and His compassion toward those who fear Him. In verse 7 the psalmist calls the people to praise the Lord with thanksgiving and to sing praise on the harp to God.

Praise the LORD: The psalm begins with an exhortation to praise and worship God. It emphasizes responding to the Lord with adoration and gratitude, acknowledging His goodness and sovereignty through praise.

Thanksgiving: The psalmist encourages the people to praise the Lord with thanksgiving, an expression of gratitude for God’s blessings and faithfulness. It acknowledges that everything we have comes from God, fostering a heart of gratitude and contentment.

Music and the Harp: The harp was a common instrument in ancient Israel used to accompany songs of praise. While verse 7 does not explicitly mention the harp in some renderings, musical instruments were often employed in worship. Singing and playing the harp can uplift the soul and engage the heart in worship, offering a beautiful expression of our adoration to God.

Application: This verse teaches the importance of praising God with a thankful heart and using music as a means of worship. It reminds believers to express gratitude for God’s goodness and to offer praise in various ways, including through song and instrumental worship. By doing so, we engage both heart and voice, honoring and magnifying the Lord, and cultivating a lifestyle of continual praise and thanksgiving.
