Psalms 147:6

Posted on 18 May at 14:11
Listen to this article

“The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground.”

Context:Psalm 147 is a psalm of praise that emphasises God’s care for His people, His power, and His control over all creation. It acknowledges God’s restoration of Jerusalem and His favour toward those who fear Him. In verse 6, the psalmist highlights God’s concern for the humble and His judgment upon the wicked.

Understanding the terms:

  • “The LORD”: Refers to Yahweh, the personal name of the God of Israel, often translated as “the LORD” in the KJV.
  • “Meek”: Refers to those who are humble, gentle, and submissive in their attitude towards God and others. The meek rely on God’s strength rather than their own.
  • “Wicked”: Represents those who are actively opposed to God’s ways, rejecting His authority and living in rebellion against His commands.

God’s care for the meek:

  • The verse begins by emphasising God’s concern for the meek. The Lord “lifteth up” the meek, indicating His support and exaltation of those who possess a humble and gentle spirit.
  • This verse aligns with Jesus’ teaching in the New Testament, where He said, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). God esteems the meek and promises them an inheritance.

God’s judgment on the wicked:

  • The latter part of the verse states that God “casteth the wicked down to the ground.” Here, “the ground” represents a place of humiliation and defeat.
  • This statement reflects God’s justice and His commitment to righteousness. The wicked, who persist in their rebellion against God, will ultimately face His judgment and be brought low.

Application:As believers, we are encouraged to cultivate meekness, which involves submitting ourselves to God and acknowledging our dependence on Him. God promises to uplift the meek and provide for them. We should also remember that God is just, and He will ultimately bring down the wicked. This truth should give us confidence in His sovereignty and motivate us to live uprightly.

Overall, Psalm 147:6 reminds us of God’s care for the humble and His judgment upon the wicked. It encourages us to adopt an attitude of meekness and trust in God’s justice.
