Psalms 147:5

Listen to this article

“Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.”

1. Context: Psalm 147 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God for His goodness and His care for His people. It celebrates God’s power, His provision, and His wisdom. This particular verse, Psalm 147:5, highlights the greatness of the Lord and His infinite understanding.

2. Great is our Lord: The psalmist begins by acknowledging the greatness of the Lord. It emphasizes that God is not just good or powerful but that His greatness surpasses human comprehension. It points to His superiority and exalted nature.

3. Of great power: The psalmist acknowledges God’s immense power. This power is not limited or finite but extends beyond human limitations. It emphasizes God’s ability to accomplish His purposes and to intervene in the lives of His people.

4. His understanding is infinite: The psalmist further proclaims that God’s understanding is beyond measure. Unlike human understanding, which is limited and flawed, God’s understanding has no bounds. God comprehends all things perfectly and completely. He knows every detail of our lives, our thoughts, and our circumstances.

5. Application: Understanding and applying this verse in our lives can have several implications:

  • – Trusting in God’s greatness: Recognizing God’s greatness helps us to trust Him fully. We can have confidence that the One who is great in power and understanding is capable of handling any situation we face.
  • – Seeking God’s wisdom: Since God’s understanding is infinite, we can turn to Him for wisdom and guidance. We can seek His counsel through prayer and study of His Word, knowing that His wisdom surpasses our own.
  • – Finding comfort in God’s knowledge: The infinite understanding of God assures us that nothing in our lives goes unnoticed by Him. He knows our struggles, our joys, and our needs. We can find comfort in knowing that we are seen and understood by the Creator of the universe.

6. Connection to the bigger biblical narrative: Psalm 147:5 aligns with the broader biblical theme of God’s greatness and His omniscience. Throughout the Bible, we see instances of God’s wisdom and understanding displayed. From His knowledge of every star in the sky (Psalm 147:4) to His intimate knowledge of each individual (Psalm 139:1-4), the Scriptures consistently affirm God’s infinite understanding.
