Listen to this article

“Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.”

Context:Psalm 139 is a profound and introspective psalm attributed to King David. It reflects on the omnipresence, omniscience, and the intimate knowledge of God concerning every aspect of an individual’s life.

God’s knowledge of our actions:The verse begins by acknowledging that God knows our “downsitting” and “uprising.” This phrase signifies that God is aware of our sitting down and getting up, encompassing the entirety of our actions throughout the day. It implies that God’s knowledge extends to every aspect of our lives, including our ordinary routines and actions.

God’s understanding of our thoughts:The verse further declares that God understands our thoughts from afar. This demonstrates that God’s knowledge is not limited to our external actions but also encompasses the deepest recesses of our hearts and minds. Even before we articulate or express our thoughts, God comprehends them completely. It highlights the divine attribute of omniscience, indicating that God is aware of our innermost thoughts and desires.

Intimacy with God:The verse expresses a profound intimacy between an individual and God. It signifies that God is not distant or detached but actively engaged with His creation. He knows and understands every aspect of our lives, including our physical actions and our innermost thoughts. This knowledge is not limited by time or space but encompasses every moment and every thought.

Application:This verse can bring great comfort and assurance to believers. It reminds us that we are never alone, and God is always with us. God’s all-encompassing knowledge of our lives assures us that He is intimately involved in every detail, offering guidance, support, and understanding. It also encourages us to be mindful of our thoughts and actions, knowing that God sees and understands everything. This awareness can inspire us to seek a closer relationship with God and align our lives with His will.

  • Overall, Psalm 139:2 highlights the comprehensive knowledge and understanding that God has of our lives. It affirms His presence in every aspect of our existence and calls us to embrace the intimate relationship we can have with Him.
