Psalms 138:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:12

“Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.”

1. Context: The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers attributed to King David and other writers. This particular psalm is attributed to David and is known as a psalm of thanksgiving and praise. It expresses gratitude and reverence toward God.

2. The LORD’s exalted nature: The verse begins by acknowledging that the LORD is high. It emphasizes the transcendence and exalted nature of God. God is far above all creation and is worthy of praise and honor.

3. God’s regard for the lowly: Despite His exalted position, the verse goes on to reveal that God has respect for the lowly. The term “lowly” refers to those who are humble, meek, and of low position in society. God does not overlook or disregard the humble and those who are considered insignificant by the world’s standards.

4. God’s response to the proud: In contrast to His regard for the lowly, the verse also mentions that God knows the proud from afar off. The proud are those who exalt themselves, have an inflated sense of self-importance, and rely on their own strength. God distances Himself from the proud and their attitudes.

5. Spiritual lessons:

  • a. Humility: The verse highlights the importance of humility. God appreciates and values a humble heart. Humility involves recognizing our dependence on God, acknowledging our limitations, and approaching Him with a posture of reverence and submission.
  • b. God’s character: The verse reveals aspects of God’s character. He is both high and exalted, deserving of our praise, and yet He is also attentive to the lowly. God’s love and care extend to those who are often overlooked or marginalized by society.
  • c. Pride and its consequences: The verse warns against the dangers of pride. Pride separates us from God and hinders our relationship with Him. It leads to self-centeredness, self-reliance, and a lack of reliance on God. Therefore, we should guard against pride and cultivate humility.

6. Application:

  • a. Approach God with humility: Let us approach God with humility, recognizing His greatness and our dependence on Him. We can come to Him in prayer, worship, and daily living, acknowledging our need for His guidance and grace.
  • b. Value the lowly: As followers of God, we should emulate His example by valuing and caring for the lowly. We can extend kindness, compassion, and support to those who are overlooked or marginalized in our communities.
  • c. Guard against pride: Let us examine our hearts and guard against pride. Cultivating humility involves recognizing our weaknesses, surrendering our prideful attitudes, and seeking God’s will above our own.
