Psalms 139:3

“Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.”

1. Context:Psalm 139 is a beautiful poetic expression of David’s awe and wonder at the omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence of God. It explores God’s intimate knowledge of every aspect of our lives, His presence that surrounds us at all times, and His unfathomable understanding of our thoughts.

2. God’s Awareness:The verse begins with the acknowledgment that God encompasses our path and our lying down. It signifies that God is aware of every step we take and every moment of rest we experience. It reveals His attentive and watchful nature. Nothing escapes His notice or attention. This understanding should bring us comfort, knowing that God is always near and aware of our circumstances.

3. God’s Intimacy:The verse goes on to say that God is acquainted with all our ways. It emphasizes that God has intimate knowledge of every aspect of our lives. He knows our thoughts, desires, struggles, and triumphs. This speaks to the personal relationship God desires to have with His people. It also highlights the fact that we cannot hide anything from God. He sees the true condition of our hearts.

4. Application:Understanding that God is intimately acquainted with all our ways should have profound implications for our lives. It means that we can approach Him in complete transparency and honesty. We can bring our joys, fears, doubts, and concerns to Him, knowing that He understands and cares for us deeply. We can find solace in the fact that God sees the bigger picture even when we do not. It should also challenge us to live in a manner that honours God since He knows every detail of our lives.
