Psalms 147:4

“He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.”

Psalm 147:4 (KJV) says: He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.

Context: Psalm 147 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God for His greatness and His care for His people. It celebrates God’s power and knowledge, particularly in His creation and sustenance of the world.

God’s Knowledge and Power: This verse highlights the incomparable knowledge and power of God. It emphasizes two aspects:

a. Counting the Stars: “He telleth the number of the stars.” The psalmist acknowledges that God has complete knowledge of the vast number of stars in the heavens. This speaks to God’s omniscience, His all-knowing nature. It demonstrates that God’s understanding extends far beyond human comprehension. Just as He is aware of the number of stars, He knows and understands every detail about His creation, including every individual’s life.

b. Naming the Stars: “He calleth them all by their names.” Not only does God know the number of stars, but He also assigns each one a unique name. This implies an intimate relationship and personal care from God towards His creation. It shows His attention to detail and His intimate knowledge of every aspect of His creation, no matter how vast or seemingly insignificant. The act of naming implies ownership and authority, emphasizing God’s sovereignty over all things.

Application:

  • Reverence for God’s Knowledge: Reflecting on the vastness of the universe and the countless stars should lead us to awe and reverence for God’s knowledge and wisdom. It reminds us that God’s understanding surpasses our own, and we can trust in His guidance and provision.
  • Personal Significance: Just as God knows and names each star, He knows and cares for each of us individually. We are not mere specks in the universe but are intimately known and loved by our Creator. This truth should bring comfort, assurance, and a sense of purpose to our lives.
  • Trust in God’s Sovereignty: The psalmist’s recognition of God’s power and knowledge should inspire us to trust in His sovereignty. Just as He governs the vastness of the universe, He is capable of overseeing and guiding every aspect of our lives. We can find peace and security in surrendering to His loving and all-knowing care.

Overall, Psalm 147:4 encourages us to marvel at God’s wisdom, to find comfort in His personal knowledge of us, and to trust in His sovereignty over our lives. It reminds us of the greatness of our God and His intimate involvement in the world He has created.
