Psalms 16:5
“The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.”
Context:Psalm 16 is attributed to David and is known as a Michtam, which means a golden psalm or a psalm of inscription. It is a prayer of trust and confidence in God’s protection and provision. In this verse, David acknowledges that the Lord is not only his inheritance but also the one who sustains and preserves his life.
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance:The term “portion” here refers to a share or a part of something. David declares that the Lord is the portion of his inheritance, emphasising that God Himself is the source of his security, blessings, and ultimate fulfilment. In the context of the Old Testament, inheritance was an important concept related to the Promised Land and the blessings God bestowed upon His people. David recognises that his true inheritance is found in God alone.
The LORD is the portion of my cup:The “cup” metaphorically represents a person’s destiny or portion in life. David affirms that God is not only his inheritance but also the one who determines and controls his destiny. In other words, God is the one who determines the path David will walk, the blessings he will receive, and the experiences he will encounter. David recognises that his life is in God’s hands, and he trusts in His sovereignty.
Thou maintainest my lot:David acknowledges that it is God who upholds or sustains his assigned portion or destiny. The Hebrew word translated as “maintainest” can also be translated as “uphold,” “support,” or “sustain.” David understands that it is not by his own effort or strength that he can secure his future, but rather by God’s providence and care. He finds assurance in knowing that God will protect and preserve his lot in life.
Overall, Psalms 16:5 expresses David’s deep trust in God as the ultimate source of his inheritance, his destiny, and his security. David recognises that his true fulfilment and purpose are found in God alone, and he places his complete confidence in God’s guidance and provision.
