Psalms 16:5

The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

Context

Psalm 16 is attributed to David and is called a Michtam, a golden psalm or a psalm of inscription. It is a prayer of trust in God’s protection and provision. In this verse, David declares that the Lord is his inheritance and the one who sustains his life. The language of portion, inheritance, and cup comes from the Old Testament division of land among the tribes of Israel. Yet David says that the Lord Himself is his portion, not a piece of land. This echoes the unique status of the Levitical priests, who received no land but had the Lord as their inheritance (Numbers 18:20; Deuteronomy 18:1-2).

Meaning

The word “portion” means a share or part of something. David affirms that God is the source of his security, blessings, and ultimate fulfilment. The “cup” represents a person’s destiny or portion in life. David trusts that God determines his path, his blessings, and his experiences. The Hebrew word translated as “maintainest” can also mean “uphold,” “support,” or “sustain.” David knows that he cannot secure his future by his own effort; God’s providence and care preserve his lot. This is a declaration of total dependence on and contentment in God alone.

Biblical connections

This verse also points to Christ, the Messiah, who perfectly trusted the Father. For the Christian, it becomes a personal confession: true treasure and security are found in a relationship with God through Him. The psalmist rejects any other source of ultimate security or identity, finding satisfaction in the Lord as the ultimate good.

Application

Believers today can make David’s words their own. When life feels uncertain, God remains the unchanging portion. His care upholds every believer’s lot, just as He upheld David’s. This truth frees us from anxiety about the future and from seeking security in possessions or circumstances. Instead, we can rest in God’s sovereign control and faithful preservation.

Reflection

David’s confidence in God’s provision invites us to examine where we place our trust. Do we look to God as our inheritance and cup, or do we rely on our own plans? The verse assures us that the Lord maintains our lot, so we can live with peace and hope, knowing that our lives are held securely in His hands.
