Psalms 18:31

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God?”

1. Context: Psalm 18 is attributed to David and is a hymn of thanksgiving and praise to God for delivering him from his enemies, particularly King Saul. In this verse, David acknowledges God as his ultimate source of strength and protection.

2. The Nature of God: The verse begins with the question, “For who is God save the Lord?” This question highlights the uniqueness and supremacy of God. There is no other God besides the Lord, Yahweh. It emphasises monotheism and acknowledges that there is no other deity who can compare to the Lord.

3. God as a Rock: The second question in the verse asks, “or who is a rock save our God?” Here, David uses the metaphor of God as a rock to illustrate His stability, reliability, and strength. A rock provides a solid foundation, a place of refuge, and protection. In the face of danger and uncertainty, God is the unchanging and secure refuge for His people.

4. Trusting in God Alone: This verse encourages trust and dependence on God alone. By acknowledging that God is the only true God and the only reliable source of strength and stability, David emphasises the importance of putting one’s faith and confidence in God. As believers, we are reminded to look to God in all situations and to trust Him completely.

5. Application: Psalm 18:31 encourages us to reflect on our own lives and consider the ways in which we may be seeking strength or security in things other than God. It challenges us to reevaluate our priorities and redirect our trust toward the Lord. By recognising God as our sole source of strength and refuge, we can find comfort, confidence, and peace in Him.
