Psalms 18:32

It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.

Psalms 18:32 (KJV)

Psalm 18 is a song of deliverance attributed to King David, praising God for His faithfulness and mighty acts in David’s life. The same song appears in 2 Samuel 22, where the parallel verse states, “God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect” (2 Samuel 22:33). This confirms that David composed this song after God delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul.

The verse begins by acknowledging that it is God who girds or clothes us with strength. The imagery is that of a warrior being equipped with a belt or armor for battle. David recognised that his strength and abilities were ultimately from God, reflecting humility and dependence on God’s provision. This points to the dependence of believers on God for strength, both physically and spiritually. It reminds us that we can find our strength in God alone.

The verse also speaks of God making David’s way perfect. This does not mean that David’s life was without difficulties or challenges. Rather, it means that God enabled David to walk in His ways, leading him on the path of righteousness and guiding him to victory over his enemies. God’s guidance and protection made David’s way secure and complete. Various translations render this as “makes my way safe” or “keeps my way secure,” all pointing to God’s sovereign guidance and protection.

The warrior imagery of being girded with strength connects to Psalm 18:39, where David says God has girded him with strength for battle. This reinforces the idea of divine enablement for conflict and the reality that true strength and a secure path come from God alone.

As believers, we can apply this verse to our own lives. We can rely on God’s strength, knowing that He equips us for the tasks and challenges we face. We are not left to our own devices but can draw upon the power and strength of God. Additionally, God’s guidance and direction can lead us on the path of righteousness and help us navigate through the obstacles we encounter. This is a call to trust in God’s empowerment and direction, not in self-reliance.

This verse reflects David’s gratitude and trust in God. Throughout the psalm, he expresses his thankfulness for God’s deliverance and salvation. It serves as a reminder for us to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and trust in God, acknowledging His role in our lives and giving Him the praise and honour He deserves.
