Psalms 18:33
He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.
Psalms 18:33 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 18 is David’s song of thanksgiving after the Lord delivered him from Saul and other enemies. David praises God for His faithfulness, strength, and protection. This verse sits within a longer description of God’s training and equipping of David for battle.
Meaning
A hind is a female deer, known for its agility and surefootedness on rocky slopes. David says God “makes” his feet like hinds’ feet, meaning God gives him the ability to move safely and confidently through dangerous terrain. The second image, “high places,” refers to mountain strongholds where David found safety and victory. God “sets” him there, showing that his security and honor come from divine favor, not his own skill. The verse teaches that God empowers His people, giving them stability and confidence to face life’s challenges.
Biblical connections
The same wording appears in 2 Samuel 22:34, part of another version of David’s song. This repetition shows how important this picture was to David. It also connects to Habakkuk 3:19, where the prophet uses similar language about God making his feet like hinds’ feet to walk on high places, reinforcing the theme of divine enablement.
Application
God still equips His people for the challenges they face. When we encounter difficult circumstances, we can ask Him for stability and grace to move forward without falling. The verse also reminds us that God is the one who lifts us to places of safety and influence. We do not earn these positions; He grants them. As we depend on Him, He gives us agility to navigate obstacles and places us where we can stand secure.
Trust God’s guidance in hard times, knowing He gives strength for each step.
Give Him credit for successes and victories, recognizing His hand in our lives.
Reflection
David’s words invite us to examine where we place our confidence. Our own abilities are limited, but God’s power is not. He can make us surefooted in the most unstable situations and set us in places we could never reach alone. This verse encourages us to rely on Him daily, not only in crisis but in every ordinary step of obedience.
