Lift vp your heads, O yee gates, and be ye lift vp ye euerlasting doores; and the King of glory shall come in. Psalms 24:7 (KJV)

Psalm 24 is attributed to King David and is often linked to the ascent of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. It is a majestic hymn that focuses on the glory and kingship of God. The psalm is divided into three sections: verses 1‑2 acknowledge God as creator and owner of all things, verses 3‑6 describe the characteristics of those who may approach God’s presence, and verses 7‑10 emphasize the entrance of the King of glory.

In verse 7 the gates and everlasting doors symbolize the entrance or access points to the presence of God. This imagery suggests that God’s presence is not freely accessible to all but requires certain qualifications or conditions before entry is permitted.

The phrase “Lift up your heads” is an invocation for the gates and doors to open wide. It calls for the removal of barriers or obstacles that might hinder God’s entry and serves as an exhortation to those who guard the gates to honor the arrival of the King of glory.

“The King of glory” refers to God Himself. In this context it signifies the majestic and sovereign presence of God, highlighting His authority, power, and divine attributes. The wording indicates that when the gates and doors are lifted, God, the King of glory, will come in.

Spiritual application flows naturally from this imagery. First, believers are urged to open their hearts to God, adopting a posture of openness and surrender, removing any hindrances that prevent Him from entering, so that they may experience His presence and the fullness of His glory. Second, recognizing God as the King of glory helps us acknowledge His supreme authority over all creation, prompting us to honor, revere, and submit to His divine rule in every aspect of life. Third, the call to lift the gates reminds us to actively seek God’s presence through prayer, worship, and diligent study of His Word, desiring to draw near to Him and experience His glory. Finally, many view Psalm 24 as a Messianic psalm pointing to Jesus Christ as the ultimate King of glory; thus the verse can be seen as a call for all believers to prepare their hearts for Christ’s second coming, eagerly awaiting His glorious return.
