Psalms 27:12

Listen to this article

“Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.”

Psalm 27 is attributed to King David and is often referred to as a psalm of trust and confidence in God’s protection. It expresses the author’s unwavering faith in God’s deliverance and his desire for divine intervention in the face of adversaries.

In verse 12, David pleads with God to not allow him to be handed over to the will of his enemies. He acknowledges that false witnesses have risen up against him, individuals who have testified falsely and spread lies with the intention of causing harm. Furthermore, David describes these adversaries as people who “breathe out cruelty,” emphasizing their malicious intent and the harm they seek to inflict upon him.

This verse reflects the common experience of facing opposition and slanderous accusations. David, as a king, encountered numerous enemies throughout his life, including Saul, his predecessor, and other adversaries who sought to undermine his authority. The language used in this verse conveys David’s desperation for God’s intervention and protection in the face of such opposition.

From a broader perspective, this verse also speaks to the spiritual battle that believers may encounter. In the New Testament, Christians are reminded that they have an adversary in the form of the devil, who seeks to accuse, deceive, and harm them (1 Peter 5:8). Like David, believers are encouraged to put their trust in God’s deliverance and to resist the attacks of the enemy.

In summary, Psalm 27:12 highlights the plea of the psalmist for divine protection and deliverance from false witnesses and cruel adversaries. It underscores the importance of trusting in God’s intervention when faced with opposition and relying on His strength to overcome challenges.
