Psalms 27:8

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek.

Psalms 27:8 (KJV)

Psalm 27 is a song of trust attributed to King David. In it, David speaks of God as his light, salvation, and stronghold. This verse sits at the center of that confidence. God speaks first, inviting His people to seek His face. The psalmist then answers with a promise from his own heart.

To seek God’s face means to desire His presence, not merely His gifts. In the Old Testament, the face of God represents His favor and nearness. The command “Seek ye my face” is gracious; God calls His people to Himself. The heart’s reply shows true devotion. The heart stands for the whole inner person, where desires and choices are made. David’s answer is not forced. It flows from a heart already touched by God’s grace.

This verse also shows the right order of worship. God initiates, and the believer responds. The relationship is personal and mutual. God speaks, and the heart answers. This is more than outward religion. It is a sincere longing for communion with the Lord. True seeking is a matter of the heart, not just religious activity. The believer’s response is not forced but flows from a heart that has been touched by God’s grace.

The New Testament explains how believers may seek God’s face. Jesus Christ is the brightness of God’s glory and the way to the Father. Through Him, God’s face shines upon us. So the call to seek God is fulfilled in Christ, who opens the way into God’s presence. This connection gives the verse its gospel meaning. God, in Christ, has made His face shine upon us, and we are invited to seek Him through the Mediator.

Believers today are called to seek God’s face, not just His blessings. This involves prayer, reading Scripture, worship, and aligning the heart with His will. It is a daily choice to put God first. The heart’s response matters more than outward attendance. God looks for a sincere answer from within.

  • Seek God Himself, not only what He can give.

  • Answer His call with a resolute heart.

  • Make time for His presence through prayer and His Word.

When God says, “Seek ye my face,” how does your heart reply? David’s answer was immediate and personal. The Christian life is a continual seeking of God’s face, not in empty repetition, but in sincere devotion and dependence on His grace. Let that seeking begin today.
