Psalms 33:10
The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

Context
Psalm 33 is a song of praise that calls the righteous to rejoice in the Lord with music and gladness. It celebrates God as Creator and King, moving from the wonders of creation to His care over human affairs. In verse 10, the psalmist declares that the Lord frustrates the plans of the nations and makes their schemes ineffective.
Meaning
The word “counsel” refers to the strategies and purposes of the nations, while “devices” means their thoughts, plots, or machinations. The Hebrew verb translated “bringeth to nought” carries the idea of making something void or frustrating it. God actively nullifies any plan that opposes His will, whether from foreign powers or from people within His own land. Human wisdom, when set against God, is ultimately powerless.
Biblical connections
The next verse, Psalm 33:11, contrasts the failure of human counsel with the eternal standing of the Lord’s counsel. This pairing shows that God’s purposes are unshakable, while human schemes are temporary and subject to His judgment. The same truth appears in Isaiah 8:10, where the nations’ plans are brought to nothing because God is with His people.
Application
Believers can face opposition from those who plot against them or against God’s work. This verse reassures us that no human effort can ultimately succeed against the Lord.
