Psalms 34:16
The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
Psalms 34:16 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 34 is attributed to David, written while he fled from Saul. It is a song of praise and thanksgiving for God’s deliverance. The immediate context contrasts the Lord’s care for the righteous (Psalm 34:15) with His opposition to evildoers (Psalm 34:16).
Meaning
The “face of the Lord” refers to God’s presence, attention, and favour. It symbolises His character and nature. Throughout the Bible, the face of the Lord is associated with divine judgment, favour, and blessing. Here, His face being “against” evildoers indicates His active opposition to wickedness. God is holy and just, and He cannot tolerate sin. He actively opposes and judges those who persist in wickedness.
This opposition is not directed at everyone who sins, for even the righteous have sin. It is directed at those who live in sin, whose course of life is a series of wickedness, who are workers of iniquity, who have no sense of sin nor sorrow for it, and who continue in it without shame or fear. Against such persons, the Lord shows His resentment and stirs up His wrath.
The phrase “to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth” speaks to the severity of God’s judgment. It implies that God will not only punish the wicked but also remove their memory from the earth. This does not mean they are forgotten by God but rather that their wickedness will be erased from the collective memory of humanity. This underscores the seriousness of persistent, unrepentant evil and the certainty of divine judgment.
Biblical connections
This verse serves as a warning and a call to examine one’s life, turning from evil and seeking the Lord’s face in righteousness. It reminds us that our actions matter to God, and He expects us to follow His commandments and pursue holiness.
Application
God’s opposition to evil assures us that He will not allow evil to prevail indefinitely. Ultimately, He will judge and punish the wicked.
The importance of righteousness reminds us of the significance of living a righteous and upright life.
God’s faithfulness to His people highlights His care and protection for those who trust in the Lord, knowing that He is with them and will deliver them.
Reflection
Although this verse primarily addresses the judgment on the wicked, it highlights the need for salvation and redemption. In Jesus Christ, God offers forgiveness and reconciliation for those who turn away from evil and place their faith in Him. Through the Gospel, we can escape the judgment of God and receive eternal life.
