I will giue thee thankes in the great congregation: I will praise thee among much people. Psalms 35:18 (KJV)

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers attributed to King David and other authors. Psalm 35 is attributed to David and is classified as an imprecatory psalm, in which the psalmist calls upon God to judge and deliver him from his enemies. In verse 18, David declares his determination to give thanks and praise to God in the midst of a large gathering of believers.

The verse begins with David’s declaration to give thanks to God. Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of our relationship with Him; acknowledging God’s goodness and faithfulness and expressing thankfulness for His blessings is essential. David’s intention to give thanks in the great congregation shows his desire to share his gratitude with a broad community, highlighting the public nature of worship and praise.

David’s desire to praise God among much people emphasizes the importance of corporate worship. While personal prayer and devotion are vital, gathering with fellow believers in a larger congregation provides an opportunity for communal praise. Corporate worship encourages fellowship, edification, and the sharing of faith experiences. It allows believers to unite their voices in magnifying God, creating an atmosphere of celebration and adoration.

The psalmist’s intention to praise God among much people also points to a witness motive. Our worship and expressions of gratitude can serve as testimony to God’s faithfulness and love. When we worship God in the presence of others, it can inspire and encourage them in their own faith journeys, demonstrating the transformative power of God in our lives and drawing others closer to Him.

Psalm 35:18 reminds us of the importance of gratitude, corporate worship, and being a witness. We should cultivate a heart of thanksgiving, regularly expressing our gratitude to God. We should also actively participate in corporate worship, valuing the fellowship and encouragement of the larger body of believers. Moreover, we ought to consider how our worship and testimonies can impact those around us, aiming to be a positive influence that points others toward God’s love and faithfulness.

Studying the Bible is an ongoing process; exploring the broader context and related scriptures enriches our understanding and deepens our devotion.
