Psalms 35:19

Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

Psalms 35:19 (KJV)

Psalm 35 is David’s prayer for deliverance from enemies who oppose him without reason. He pleads for God’s intervention and protection against unjust opposition.

David asks that his enemies not rejoice over him wrongfully. The word “wrongfully” describes the enemies themselves: they oppose him for false reasons. They hate him without cause, and they “wink with the eye” as a gesture of contempt and mockery. This is not a call for personal revenge but a plea for God to prevent the triumph of the wicked. David’s request is a lament and an appeal to God, not a demand for vengeance.

David’s experience points to Jesus Christ, who was also hated and persecuted without cause. In John 15:25, Jesus applies the words “They hated me without a cause” to Himself. The enemies’ malicious gestures and deceitful words are seen in the surrounding verses, where they devise lies and sneer with satisfaction. Their behavior reflects the hatred that opposes the righteous.

When we face unjust opposition, we can bring our pain to God in prayer. He sees every wrong and will vindicate His people in His time. We need not repay evil, but trust God’s justice. This verse reminds us that God is our defender, and He will not let the wicked rejoice forever.

This verse reassures us that God knows when we are treated unfairly. He is our defender, and He will not let the wicked rejoice forever.
