Psalms 44:5
Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
Psalms 44:5 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 44 is a communal lament written by the sons of Korah. The people remember God’s past help, yet they now face defeat and shame. In this verse they declare their confidence that victory comes only through the Lord.
Meaning
The words “push down” and “tread them under” are military pictures of conquest. The psalmist does not trust in human strength or weapons. He says victory comes “through thee” and “through thy name.” In Scripture, God’s name stands for His character, power, and honor. To act in His name is to act by His authority.
The phrase “through thee” may also point to the Word of God, understood by some as the Lord Jesus Christ, who brings complete deliverance to His people. The image of pushing with horns recalls the “horn of salvation” (Luke 1:69), by which believers, though weak, become more than conquerors. This metaphor comes from creatures that push with their horns, showing that God empowers His people to overcome.
Biblical connections
The next verses (Psalm 44:6-7) confirm this truth: the psalmist will not trust in his bow or sword, for God gives victory. This connection shows that reliance on the Lord, not on human ability, is the heart of the verse. The psalmist’s confidence is not in his own might but in God’s power and name. The Chaldee paraphrase renders “through thee” as “through the Word,” a phrase some commentators see as pointing to Christ, the church’s King and God, who has accomplished full deliverance for His people.
Application
Trust in God’s power rather than your own skill or resources.
Honor God’s authority by aligning your actions with His will.
Remember God’s past faithfulness to strengthen hope in present trials.
Pray with confidence, knowing that God hears and can deliver.
Reflection
This verse models confident prayer. In spiritual battles, believers do not fight alone; they rely on Christ’s victory. When you face opposition, you can say with the psalmist that triumph comes through God and through His name. This is a call to depend on God’s strength, not our own, and to trust that He will give us victory over every enemy.
