Psalms 49:5
Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

Context
Psalm 49 is a wisdom psalm from the sons of Korah. It teaches about the shortness of life and the uselessness of trusting in wealth. The psalmist speaks to all people, rich and poor, because death comes to everyone. In this setting, verse 5 asks a bold question: why should a believer fear when trouble comes?
Meaning
The question is not a confession of fear but a declaration of confidence. The “days of evil” mean times of danger, loss, or persecution. The phrase “the iniquity of my heels” is hard to translate. It may picture enemies who follow closely to trip the psalmist, like a hunter chasing prey. It may also mean his own sins that surround him, or even death itself as the result of sin. The Targum, an ancient Jewish paraphrase, reads it as “in my end,” pointing to the last days of life. In every case, the psalmist says there is no reason to fear, because God sees his condition and will act at the right time.
Biblical connections
The rest of Psalm 49 explains this confidence. Verses 7 through 9 say that no person can pay a ransom for another life, but verse 15 gives the hope: God will redeem the soul of the faithful from the power of the grave. This connection shows that fear of evil days is overcome by trust in God’s sovereign care and in His power to deliver from death itself.
Application
When evil days come, we often feel trapped by our own failures or by the harm others do to us. This verse invites us to ask the same question: why should we fear? Earthly wealth cannot save us, and human enemies cannot separate us from God. Our security rests in His unfailing love and His promise to redeem those who trust Him.
Reflection
Consider what surrounds you today. Is it the pressure of trouble, the memory of sin, or the fear of death? The psalmist’s confidence points to a God who is awake to every danger. We can face the worst days with quiet hope, knowing that He who redeems from the grave will also sustain us through every trial.
