Psalms 50:10
“For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.”
1. Context: Psalm 50 is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians during the time of King David. This psalm is a call to worship and an expression of God’s authority and judgment. In verses 1-6, God is depicted as a righteous judge, summoning the heavens and the earth as witnesses to His judgment.
2. God’s Sovereignty: In verse 10, God declares His ownership over all creation. He states that every beast of the forest belongs to Him, as well as the cattle upon a thousand hills. This verse highlights God’s sovereignty and His dominion over all things. It emphasises that everything in the world ultimately belongs to God.
3. Stewardship: Although God asserts His ownership, it is essential to understand that humans are called to be stewards of God’s creation. As creatures made in His image, we have the responsibility to care for and responsibly manage the resources He has given us. God’s ownership does not diminish our role as stewards; instead, it reminds us of our accountability to Him for how we utilise and care for the earth and its inhabitants.
4. Trust in God’s Provision: This verse also conveys God’s abundant provision. He is the source of all resources and has the ability to supply all our needs. The imagery of “a thousand hills” suggests vast wealth and abundance. It reminds us that God’s provision is more than sufficient for us. As we trust in Him and seek His kingdom, He promises to take care of our needs (Matthew 6:33).
5. Gratitude and Humility: Recognising that everything belongs to God should cultivate gratitude and humility in our hearts. When we acknowledge that all things come from Him, we develop a posture of thankfulness for His provision and a humble attitude in our dealings with others.
6. Application: Psalm 50:10 encourages us to trust in God’s ownership and provision. It invites us to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us and to cultivate gratitude and humility in our hearts. By recognising that God is the ultimate owner of everything, we can align our attitudes and actions with His purposes and seek to glorify Him in all that we do.
