Psalms 52:6
The righteous also shall see, and feare, and shall laugh at him. Psalms 52:6 (KJV)
Psalm 52:6 (KJV) says, “The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him.” This verse belongs to a psalm attributed to David that was composed when Doeg the Edomite reported to Saul about David’s visit to Ahimelech the priest. The psalm confronts the wickedness and deceit of Doeg and sets it against the righteousness and faithfulness of God.
Context
Psalm 52 is classified as a Maschil, an instructional or wisdom psalm, according to its superscription in the KJV and scholarly consensus. It was written during the period when David was being pursued by Saul and surrounded by hostile forces. Doeg’s betrayal provides the immediate backdrop, and the psalm reflects David’s response to the treachery he faced.
The Righteous
In this verse “the righteous” denotes those who are in a right relationship with God, living according to His ways and obeying His commandments. They are people who trust in God, seek to follow His will, and are contrasted with the wicked individual described in the preceding verses.
Seeing, Fearing, and Laughing
The verse outlines three reactions of the righteous when they witness the downfall of the wicked:
- Seeing – The righteous observe the consequences of the wicked person’s actions and see God’s justice being executed, whether in this life or the next.
- Fearing – Their fear is a reverent awe of God’s sovereignty and power, recognizing that no evil deed escapes His notice. This is not a fear of punishment but a deep respect for God’s righteousness and authority.
- Laughing – The laughter is not merely mocking; it is a derisive, scornful response to the wicked’s downfall and a joyful acknowledgment of God’s faithful judgment.
Application
As believers we can draw several lessons from this passage:
- Trust in God’s justice: The verse reminds us that God sees the actions of the wicked, and we can rely on His perfect timing to bring about righteousness.
- Maintain righteousness: We are called to live obediently, aligning ourselves with God’s purposes so that we may stand with the righteous who witness His faithfulness.
- Reverence and awe: When we see the consequences of sin, we should respond with reverent awe for God’s authority, trusting that He will execute justice wisely.
- Joy in God’s faithfulness: Observing God’s justice should fill our hearts with gratitude and joy, knowing that He will always vindicate the righteous and uphold His promises.
