Listen to this article

“God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.”

Context:Psalm 55 is attributed to David, and it is classified as a psalm of lament. In this particular psalm, David expresses his distress and anguish over the betrayal of a close friend. He pours out his heart to God, seeking His deliverance and justice.

  • God’s Awareness and Response:The verse begins by acknowledging that God shall hear. David expresses his confidence that God is attentive and responsive to the prayers and cries of His people. As believers, we can find comfort in the assurance that God hears our prayers and is aware of our circumstances.
  • Affliction and Judgment:The verse continues by stating that God will afflict those who have wronged David. Here, David appeals to divine justice, trusting that God will bring retribution upon the wicked. It highlights the principle that God is a just and righteous judge who punishes evil and defends the innocent.
  • God’s Eternality:The phrase “he that abideth of old” emphasizes God’s eternal nature. It suggests that God has always existed and will continue to exist throughout all time. This attribute of God conveys His unchanging nature and His timeless ability to intervene in human affairs.
  • Lack of Fear:The verse concludes by stating that the wicked do not fear God because they have no changes. This suggests that the wicked, who remain unrepentant and unchanged in their sinful ways, do not have a healthy reverence or fear of God. They disregard His authority and do not recognize the consequences of their actions.
  • Selah:The word “Selah” appears at the end of the verse, which is a musical notation used in the Psalms. Its precise meaning is uncertain, but it is thought to indicate a pause or a musical interlude, allowing for reflection and meditation on the preceding words.

Application:Trust in God’s attentiveness: Like David, we can have confidence that God hears our prayers and is aware of our struggles. We can approach Him with our burdens and find comfort in knowing that He listens and cares.

  • Trust in God’s attentiveness: Like David, we can have confidence that God hears our prayers and is aware of our struggles. We can approach Him with our burdens and find comfort in knowing that He listens and cares.
  • Seek God’s justice: Just as David appealed to God for justice, we can bring our grievances and injustices before Him. We can trust that God, as the ultimate judge, will deal with the wicked and bring about justice in His perfect timing.
  • Cultivate a healthy fear of God: Reflect on whether you truly revere and fear God. Develop a reverence for His holiness and a recognition of His authority. A healthy fear of God leads to a desire to live in accordance with His commands and avoid sinful ways.
