Psalms 55:22
“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
Psalm 55:22 (KJV) says: “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
Context: Psalm 55 is attributed to David and is classified as a lament or a prayer for deliverance. David expresses his distress and anguish due to betrayal and opposition from his enemies. In verse 22, he offers an encouraging exhortation to cast our burdens upon the Lord.
Casting Our Burdens: The verse begins with the directive, “Cast thy burden upon the LORD.” It reminds us that we are not meant to carry our burdens alone. The Hebrew word for “burden” here refers to a load or a weight that weighs us down physically, emotionally, or spiritually. This can include worries, anxieties, fears, grief, or any other heavy burdens we may carry in life.
Trusting in God: David encourages us to cast our burdens upon the Lord, indicating an act of trust and reliance on Him. By doing so, we acknowledge that God is greater than our burdens and is capable of handling them. It’s an invitation to surrender our worries and concerns to God, knowing that He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).
God’s Sustaining Power: The second part of the verse states, “and he shall sustain thee.” When we cast our burdens upon the Lord, He promises to sustain us. God’s sustaining power means that He will support, uphold, and provide for us in our times of need. He is our source of strength, comfort, and guidance. Regardless of the challenges we face, God promises to sustain us through His grace and power.
Security of the Righteous: The verse concludes by assuring us that God will “never suffer the righteous to be moved.” This statement reflects the faithfulness of God in protecting and preserving His people. It doesn’t imply that the righteous will never face difficulties or be shaken, but rather that God will ultimately ensure their security and stability.
Application: Psalm 55:22 teaches us the importance of entrusting our burdens to God.
- Prayer: Develop a habit of bringing your burdens before God in prayer, expressing your trust in Him to provide solutions and support.
- Letting go: Recognize that you are not meant to carry all your burdens alone. Surrender them to God, releasing your grip on control and allowing Him to work in your life.
- Faith and reliance: Strengthen your faith by acknowledging that God is able to sustain you in every situation. Trust in His faithfulness, knowing that He will never abandon you.
- Seek God’s guidance: When facing challenging decisions or circumstances, seek God’s wisdom and guidance. Trust that He will direct your steps and provide the strength needed to endure.
Remember, Psalm 55:22 reminds us that we serve a loving and caring God who desires to bear our burdens. Trust in His faithfulness, cast your burdens upon Him, and find rest and peace in His sustaining power.
