Psalms 56:12
Thy vowes are vpon me, O God: I will render praises vnto thee. Psalms 56:12 (KJV)
This study examines Psalm 56:12, the concluding verse of a heartfelt psalm attributed to David. Psalm 56 is classified as a Michtam, a term whose precise meaning is uncertain but may suggest an “engraved” or “memorial” poem. In this psalm David declares his trust in God while surrounded by hostile enemies, seeking divine help and protection and acknowledging that God is aware of every tear and trial he endures.
In verse 12 David affirms his commitment to God, recognizing that he has previously made vows in times of distress. He now declares his intention to fulfill those promises, expressing deep devotion and loyalty to the Lord. This declaration reveals his gratitude for God’s continual faithfulness and protection throughout his life.
David’s response is to render praises unto God. Even amid difficult circumstances his heart is filled with a spirit of worship. Rather than being consumed by fear or despair, he chooses to focus on God’s goodness and to express thankfulness through praise. The passage reminds believers of the importance of maintaining an attitude of praise, even in the midst of challenges.
Application for today includes three practical points. First, recognizing God’s faithfulness: like David, we should reflect on the ways God has protected and answered us, allowing those memories to strengthen our trust during hard times. Second, fulfilling our vows to God: believers may have made commitments in moments of need, and we are called to honor those promises by living obediently, meeting our responsibilities, and remaining faithful in our relationship with Him. Third, cultivating a heart of praise: regardless of circumstance we can choose worship, developing a habit of praising God, acknowledging His goodness, and expressing gratitude. Such worship magnifies His name, uplifts our spirits, and deepens our faith.
