Psalms 56:5

Euery day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against mee for euill. Psalms 56:5 (KJV)

Context: Psalm 56 is attributed to David when he was seized by the Philistines in Gath. In this perilous situation David cries out for God’s protection and deliverance. Verse 5 captures his anguish over enemies who twist his words and nurture malicious intentions toward him.

Wrestling of Words: David observes that “they wrest my words.” The phrase denotes the malicious twisting or distortion of his statements by his adversaries, who likely take his words out of context to accuse or defame him. This highlights the painful reality of facing opposition from those who misrepresent or misinterpret our speech.

Evil Thoughts: He further notes that the enemies’ thoughts are “against me for evil.” Their inner motives are filled with ill will, seeking his harm or downfall. The verse therefore underscores both the external distortion of his words and the internal hostility that fuels such attacks.

Application: While most believers today do not encounter the same physical danger David faced, many experience similar opposition—false accusations, gossip, or the misuse of their words. The passage reminds us to be cautious and thoughtful in our speech, ensuring that what we say is true, edifying, and reflective of God’s love and wisdom.

Trust in God: The overarching message of this verse, and the psalm as a whole, is David’s unwavering trust in God. Despite the adversity and the actions of his enemies, he turns to the Lord as his ultimate refuge and source of help. Later verses reveal his confidence that God is aware of his plight and will deliver him.

Prayer and Faith: This psalm encourages us to follow David’s example by turning to God in prayer and placing our trust in Him, even when facing opposition or challenging circumstances. It reminds us that God sees and understands our struggles, and He remains our protector and deliverer.
