Psalms 56:2

Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.

Psalms 56:2 (KJV)

Psalm 56 is attributed to David, likely written when he was seized by the Philistines. He faced constant danger and felt surrounded by those who wanted to destroy him. This verse captures his honest cry for mercy and protection.

David says his enemies “daily” seek to swallow him up. The Hebrew word for enemies can mean “watchers,” people who closely observe him for a chance to harm. The image of swallowing suggests being completely overwhelmed and consumed. He acknowledges that many fight against him, and the threat is relentless. The word “daily” shows that this opposition is not occasional but continuous, pressing on him without relief.

Yet David does not stop at describing his trouble. He turns to God and addresses Him as “O thou most High.” This title declares God’s supreme authority over every earthly power. By using it, David places his many enemies under the rule of the one true God. The title also reminds us that God sees all things and judges all things, so no enemy acts outside His knowledge or control.

In the surrounding verses, David moves from fear to trust, saying, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (Psalm 56:3). This connection shows that acknowledging danger and trusting God belong together. The New Testament also warns of spiritual adversaries who seek to destroy, such as in 1 Peter 5:8, reminding believers that opposition is not only physical. Sin, Satan, and the world can also act as enemies that try to devour faith and hope.

  • Identify your adversaries: Opposition may come from people, difficult circumstances, or spiritual forces. Recognizing the source helps you respond wisely.

  • Turn to God in trouble: Like David, bring your fears and needs to the Lord. He is your refuge and strength.

  • Trust in God’s sovereignty: The title “most High” assures you that God rules over every situation. Nothing is beyond His control.

  • Seek God’s deliverance: Present your concerns to Him, asking for protection and guidance, confident that He hears and answers according to His will.

Psalm 56:2 teaches that when opposition feels overwhelming and constant, the right response is to appeal to the Most High. God is greater than all enemies, and He invites you to trust Him in every trial. Even when the pressure seems unending, His authority remains unshaken, and His care for you never fails.
