Psalms 57:2

I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.

Psalms 57:2 (KJV)

Psalm 57 is attributed to David, likely written while he fled from King Saul and hid in a cave. In deep distress, David turns to God, seeking protection and deliverance from his enemies.

David declares, “I will cry unto God most high.” His cry shows complete dependence on God, who alone has power to help. The title “God most high” (Hebrew: El Elyon) stresses God’s absolute supremacy over all creation, including Saul and his men. David humbles himself, acknowledging that no one is greater.

The phrase “that performeth all things for me” reveals David’s trust in God’s faithfulness. The Hebrew root for “performeth” means to complete or bring to fulfillment. God is actively working in every part of David’s life, accomplishing His purposes and promises. This is not passive hope but confident assurance that God will finish what He began.

This verse echoes the certainty that God perfects what concerns His people. As the performing God, He brings His plans to completion, just as He did for David and does for believers today.

When circumstances feel beyond control, the believer’s first instinct should be prayer. Cry out to the Most High, who is both transcendent and personally engaged. Trust that He is completing all things for your good, even when you cannot see the outcome.

David’s words model a prayer of faith. In your own distress, remember that God is higher than every enemy and faithful to perform all He has promised.
