Psalms 59:12

For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.

Psalms 59:12 (KJV)

David wrote this psalm while King Saul sent men to watch his house and kill him. In that danger, David cried out to God for deliverance. His enemies used words as weapons, spreading false reports and curses against him.

The verse asks God to let the enemies be caught in their own pride because of the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips. Their speech is not careless; it is the very embodiment of their sin. The Hebrew construction links the words of their lips with the sin of their mouth, showing that whatever they say flows from evil hearts. Their cursing and lying are the specific sins named. David prays that their arrogant words become the means of their downfall. This is a plea for divine justice against those who use speech to harm the innocent.

This plea for justice against false accusers finds a deeper echo in the New Testament. Jesus Himself was falsely accused and slandered, yet God vindicated Him. The principle that God holds people accountable for their words is consistent with the teaching that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). God takes notice of sinful speech and will bring every idle word into judgment.

This verse warns us about the destructive power of the tongue. Our words should be marked by truth, kindness, and humility, not by cursing, lying, or pride. We must remember that God hears the cries of those who are slandered and falsely accused, and He will bring justice in His time. For believers, this is both a warning and a comfort.

Consider your own speech. Do your words build up or tear down? Ask God to guard your lips and to fill your heart with His truth, so that your words bring glory to Him rather than harm to others.
