Psalms 6:6

I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

Psalms 6:6 (KJV)

Psalm 6 is attributed to King David, who cries out for mercy during a time of severe affliction. He faces physical, emotional, and spiritual distress, and he pleads with God for deliverance. This psalm is often called a penitential psalm, a prayer of repentance and dependence on God’s mercy.

In verse 6, David says he is weary from groaning. His sorrow is so deep that he spends his nights weeping. The picture of his bed swimming and his couch soaked with tears shows grief that is intense and unceasing. The Hebrew verbs suggest continuous action, so his lament is not brief but persistent through the night.

David’s words reveal raw honesty before God. He does not hide his pain or pretend to be strong. Instead, he pours out his heart, describing his tears as water that soaks his bed. This language is vivid and personal, showing that true prayer can include honest expressions of anguish.

The night often makes sorrow feel heavier. David’s tears are not just a moment of sadness; they are a flood that lasts all night. His groaning is a sign of deep inner turmoil, yet he still turns to the Lord. His lament is a form of faith, because he speaks to God even when he feels overwhelmed.

David’s honesty in lament is similar to other psalms where the writer cries out to God in distress. For example, Psalm 42:3 speaks of tears as food day and night. Both passages show that God welcomes the honest cries of His people. Lament is not a lack of faith; it is a way of bringing pain to God and trusting Him to hear.

This verse encourages believers to be honest with God about their pain. There is no need to pretend to be fine when we are not. God is a compassionate Father who listens to our cries. We can bring our deepest struggles to Him, knowing that He cares.

David’s example also teaches us to keep trusting God in the middle of affliction. His tears do not mean he has lost faith. Instead, he continues to look to the Lord as his refuge. In our own sleepless nights, we can follow his example by turning our grief into prayer.

When we are weary from groaning, we can remember that God sees our tears. He does not turn away from our sorrow. Like David, we can pour out our hearts before Him and trust that He hears. Lament can become a path to renewed faith, as we place our hope in God’s mercy.
