Psalms 62:4

Posted on 18 May at 15:16
Listen to this article

“They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.”

Context:Psalm 62 is attributed to King David and is categorised as a psalm of trust and confidence in God. In this particular verse, David expresses the challenges he faces from deceitful people who seek to undermine him. Despite their deceitful intentions, David finds solace in God’s steadfastness and trustworthiness.

Understanding the Verse:

  • “They only consult to cast him down from his excellency”: David acknowledges that his adversaries are actively plotting to bring him down from his position of honour, authority, or dignity. These individuals are driven by envy, ambition, or other selfish motives. They aim to diminish David’s influence and undermine his character or accomplishments.
  • “They delight in lies”: David observes that his adversaries take pleasure in spreading falsehoods and deceit. Their intentions are not based on truth or justice but on manipulation and falsehood.
  • “They bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly”: David highlights the hypocrisy of his adversaries. Outwardly, they may pretend to be supportive or offer blessings, but their hearts are filled with malice and cursing. This contrast between their words and intentions reveals their deceptive nature.
  • “Selah”: The term “Selah” is used frequently in the Psalms, indicating a pause or musical interlude. It serves as a moment of reflection and contemplation, allowing the reader or singer to meditate on the preceding verse.

Overall, Psalm 62:4 highlights the deceptive nature of certain individuals while emphasising the importance of placing our trust in God’s faithfulness and discerning the authenticity of others. It encourages us to cultivate sincerity in our own actions and find solace in God’s steadfastness.
