“My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Psalm 62:5 (KJV):Verse: “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.”

The book of Psalms is a collection of poetic songs and prayers attributed to King David and other writers. Psalm 62 is a psalm of trust and confidence in God, emphasizing the security and steadfastness found in Him.

The verse begins with an exhortation to the soul, emphasizing the personal and intimate nature of the relationship between the psalmist and God. “Wait thou only upon God” points to an attitude of trust and reliance. Waiting upon God involves patience, surrender, and a confident expectation that God will act according to His perfect timing and will.

The psalmist declares that their expectation is from God alone. Rather than placing their hope in worldly things or human power, the psalmist recognizes that true hope and fulfillment can only come from God. This acknowledgement reveals a deep understanding of God’s faithfulness, goodness, and sovereignty.

Lessons for us:

  • a) Trust in God’s timing: Waiting upon God implies trusting His perfect timing. It can be tempting to become impatient and seek immediate solutions, but this verse encourages us to wait patiently for God’s guidance, provision, and deliverance.
  • b) Placing our expectation in God: Instead of relying on our own strength or depending on others, we should place our expectation solely on God. He is the one who never fails, who is faithful to His promises, and who has the power to bring about the best outcomes for our lives.
  • c) Developing a relationship with God: The psalmist’s soul waits upon God, indicating a deep personal connection. We are invited to cultivate a relationship with God through prayer, meditation, studying His Word, and seeking His presence. As we grow closer to Him, we will find our trust and expectation in Him strengthened.

Application:

  • a) Patience and trust: In times of uncertainty, waiting upon God requires patience and trust. We can take comfort in knowing that He is working behind the scenes, orchestrating events for our good.
  • b) Surrendering our expectations: It is essential to surrender our own expectations and desires to God, aligning them with His will. As we do so, we can be confident that His plans for us are far greater than anything we could imagine.
  • c) Seeking God above all else: We should prioritise our relationship with God, making Him the source of our expectation and hope. By seeking Him wholeheartedly, we will find true fulfilment and security in His presence.
