Psalms 62:9

Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

Psalms 62:9 (KJV)

Psalm 62 is attributed to King David and is a psalm of trust in God. In the surrounding verses, David calls God his rock, salvation, and refuge. He encourages waiting on God and pouring out the heart before Him. Verse 9 stands as a contrast, showing why such trust is necessary.

David compares two kinds of people. “Men of low degree” are ordinary, poor, or humble people. He calls them “vanity,” meaning they are fleeting and without lasting substance. “Men of high degree” are the noble, powerful, or wealthy. He calls them “a lie,” meaning they can be deceptive or unreliable. Both groups, when placed on a balance scale, are “altogether lighter than vanity.” The imagery of weighing shows that human worth and status have no true weight before God.

The point is not that people are worthless in an absolute sense. Rather, in their fallen nature and apart from God, humans cannot be the foundation for our trust. Whether poor or rich, weak or powerful, every person is limited and imperfect.

The next verse, Psalm 62:10, warns against trusting in oppression, robbery, or riches. This reinforces the same lesson. James 1:9-10 also echoes this theme, telling the lowly brother to rejoice in his exaltation and the rich in his humiliation, because the rich will fade like a flower. Both passages direct our confidence away from human status and toward God alone.

We must examine where we place our trust. Human approval, social standing, and material wealth all fail. They are like a breath that disappears. Instead, we are called to anchor our confidence in God, who is constant and faithful. When people disappoint us, we can still rest in Him.

This verse humbles us. It reminds us that no human position, whether low or high, can give lasting security. Only God is truly reliable. Let us turn from depending on people and place our whole hope in Him, who alone is worthy of our trust.
