Psalms 63:3

Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.

Psalms 63:3 (KJV)

Psalm 63 is attributed to David, who composed it while in the wilderness of Judah, a period some associate with his flight from his son Absalom. It is a psalm of deep longing for God’s presence, expressing David’s thirst for God even in difficult circumstances. In the preceding verses, David describes his soul thirsting for God in a dry and thirsty land and recalls seeing God’s power and glory in the sanctuary. This setting frames verse 3 as a declaration made in a place of physical and spiritual need.

In Psalm 63:3, David declares that God’s lovingkindness is better than life itself. The term “lovingkindness” translates the Hebrew word chesed, often rendered as “steadfast love,” “mercy,” or “faithful love.” It refers to God’s loyal and unwavering love, His faithfulness, and His consistent acts of kindness toward His covenant people. David acknowledges that experiencing God’s lovingkindness is of greater value than anything else, even his own life.

By stating that God’s lovingkindness is better than life, David emphasizes the surpassing worth of God’s love. Life without the love of God is nothing but death; a person without a share in God’s love is dead while living. All earthly enjoyments—health, riches, honor, friends—are nothing without God’s love. The meanest temporal blessings with God’s love are preferable to the greatest without it. Furthermore, God’s lovingkindness lasts longer than life; death cannot separate a believer from it.

Psalm 63:3 encourages us to reflect on the immeasurable value of God’s lovingkindness in our own lives. It prompts us to prioritize our relationship with God and recognize His steadfast love as of utmost importance. Just as David chose to respond with praise, we can respond with gratitude, worship, and praise, acknowledging the incredible love and faithfulness of God. This verse challenges us to reevaluate our priorities, ensuring that God’s love and presence remain at the forefront of our lives, even amidst challenging circumstances.

David’s declaration that God’s lovingkindness is better than life itself reveals the overflow of gratitude and adoration in his heart. Despite his challenging circumstances, he determines to use his voice to honor and glorify God. Praise becomes his natural response to experiencing the surpassing love and kindness of God. This verse invites us to consider whether we truly value God’s love above all else and to let that value shape our words and actions.
