Psalms 64:8

“So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Psalm 64:8 (KJV):Psalm 64:8 (KJV) says, “So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.”

Context:It’s essential to understand the context of the verse by considering the surrounding verses and the overall theme of the psalm. Psalm 64 is attributed to David and is categorised as a lament or prayer for protection against enemies. David expresses his concern about the schemes of the wicked and seeks God’s intervention.

Tongue as a Weapon:In this verse, David speaks of the tongue being used as a weapon by his enemies. The tongue symbolises their words, which are meant to harm, slander, and bring destruction. The power of the tongue to cause damage is a recurring theme in the Book of Psalms and other parts of Scripture (e.g., James 3:6). Here, David expresses his confidence that the wicked will ultimately face the consequences of their own malicious words.

Self-Destruction:David declares that the enemies’ own tongue will cause them to stumble and fall upon themselves. This suggests that the wicked will experience the consequences of their own actions. Their words, intended to harm others, will eventually lead to their downfall. It’s a reminder that God often works in ways that bring justice and retribution to those who engage in evil schemes.

Witnessing the Outcome:The second part of the verse states that those who witness the downfall of the wicked will flee away. This implies that when people see the righteous judgment of God and the self-destruction of the wicked, they will be filled with awe and fear. It serves as a testimony to the sovereignty and righteousness of God, causing others to turn away from evil and seek refuge in Him.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, there are a few key lessons we can draw:

  • a. Trust in God’s justice: Like David, we can trust that God will deal with the wicked and bring about justice in His perfect timing. We don’t need to take revenge or respond in kind to those who harm us with their words or actions. Instead, we can leave it in God’s hands.
  • b. Be mindful of our words: The power of the tongue should remind us to be careful with our own words. We should strive to use our speech for good, edification, and encouragement rather than for destruction or harm. Our words have the potential to bring life or death (Proverbs 18:21).
  • c. Seek refuge in God: In times of trouble and when facing enemies, we can find solace and protection in God. David’s psalm serves as a reminder that God is our ultimate defence, and we can turn to Him for help, knowing that He will vindicate us.
