Psalms 68:5

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

Psalm 68 is a victory song. It celebrates God as a mighty warrior who leads His people and defends the weak. In this setting, the psalmist declares that God is a father to the fatherless and a judge for widows. The phrase “in his holy habitation” points to God’s heavenly temple, showing that His care flows from His holy presence. This is not distant power; it is active love.

Meaning

The word “father” shows God’s care and provision for those who have no earthly father. He offers comfort, guidance, and a place of belonging. The word “judge” does not mean condemnation. In ancient times, a judge was a defender who gave justice to those who had no one to plead their case. Widows often lacked protection and legal rights. God takes their side and ensures they receive fair treatment. His compassion and His justice work together, not against each other. This dual portrait of God—mighty yet tender—invites believers to trust Him with their deepest needs.

Biblical connections

God’s heart for the vulnerable appears throughout Scripture. He commands His people to care for orphans and widows (Exodus 22:22; Deuteronomy 10:18). James 1:27 says that pure religion is “To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction.” This connects the Old Testament revelation to Christian practice.
