Psalms 69:15

Let not the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

Context

Psalm 69 is a lament of David, written during deep distress caused by enemies. The psalm is also seen as messianic because its words point to the suffering of Jesus Christ. In this verse, David pleads with God to rescue him from forces that threaten to destroy him completely.

Meaning

The waterflood pictures a sudden surge of troubles or enemies that rush over a person. The deep suggests being swallowed entirely, like Jonah in the sea or like Dathan and Abiram, whom the earth opened to receive. The pit that shuts her mouth describes a grave or prison sealed shut, leaving no way of escape. Together, these images show total helplessness and the urgent need for divine rescue.

David asks God to prevent these disasters. He does not rely on his own strength. Instead, he turns to the Lord as the only one who can save from the depths of despair and from the power of death. The verse models honest prayer, expressing raw emotion and urgent need while still trusting in God’s ability to save.

Biblical connections

This verse also foreshadows Christ’s suffering. Jesus experienced the wrath of God and the curse of the law, and he descended into death. Yet God delivered him from the pit. The Targum, an ancient Jewish interpretation, understood the pit as Gehenna, or hell. This connection shows the depth of Christ’s identification with human suffering and his victory over death.

Application

Believers can relate to David’s plea when trials feel like a flood. In such times, we can cry out to God, trusting his power to rescue and sustain us. This verse encourages us to seek God’s intervention and rely on his strength when we feel overwhelmed by the floods of life.

Consider the honesty of David’s prayer. He does not hide his fear or his need. God welcomes such prayers. When you face overwhelming circumstances, remember that the same God who delivered David and raised Christ from the pit hears your cry and is able to save.
