Psalms 71:6

Listen to this article

“By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.”

Context:Psalm 71:6 (KJV) says: “By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.”

  • Historical and Contextual Background: Psalm 71 is attributed to King David, who composed many of the psalms found in the book of Psalms. While there is no specific event mentioned in the psalm, it reflects the challenges and struggles David faced throughout his life. It is a prayer for deliverance and protection, expressing David’s unwavering trust in God’s faithfulness.
  • Acknowledging God’s Faithfulness from Birth: In verse 6, David acknowledges God’s role in his life from the very beginning. He declares that God has been his support and sustainer from the time he was in his mother’s womb. This statement emphasises the concept of God’s sovereignty and divine providence over every aspect of David’s life.
  • Gratitude for God’s Deliverance: David recognises God as the one who brought him out of his mother’s bowels, referring to his birth. This expression highlights David’s gratitude and awe for the gift of life that God bestowed upon him. It also suggests that God’s involvement in his life started even before birth, demonstrating God’s intimate knowledge and care for each individual.
  • Continuous Praise: David concludes the verse by expressing his commitment to continuous praise of God. He affirms that his praise shall be continually directed towards God. This reveals David’s devotion and desire to honour God throughout his life, acknowledging God’s ongoing presence and faithfulness.

Application to Believers Today: Though this psalm was originally penned by David, the message can resonate with believers today. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty over our lives from the moment of conception. It highlights the importance of recognising God’s faithfulness and provision throughout our existence, as well as expressing gratitude for the gift of life. Moreover, it encourages us to develop a lifestyle of continual praise and worship to God. Just as David declared his intention to praise God continually, we are called to cultivate an attitude of praise and thanksgiving, recognising God’s ongoing involvement in our lives.
