Psalms 71:7

I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.

Context

Psalm 71 is a prayer of an older believer who has trusted God from youth. The psalmist faces enemies and hard times, yet he remembers God’s long history of care. In verse 7 he speaks of being “a wonder unto many.” The Hebrew word for “wonder” can mean a sign, portent, or marvel. People look at him and are amazed, either because of his troubles or because of God’s visible help in his life.

Meaning

The word “wonder” suggests that the psalmist’s life attracts attention. He may be a spectacle of suffering, or he may be a living proof of God’s power. Either way, he does not find his security in what others think. He declares that God is his “strong refuge.” A refuge is a place of safety, and “strong” shows that God is powerful and reliable. The contrast is clear: human opinion changes, but God does not. The psalmist’s confidence is not in his own strength but in God, who has been his refuge from birth.

Biblical connections

Earlier in the same psalm, the writer calls God his rock and fortress, and he says God has been his hope from youth (Psalm 71:3, 5-6). Those verses prepare us for this bold statement. The psalmist’s confidence is not new; it grows from a lifetime of depending on God. His life becomes a sign to others of God’s faithfulness, just as God’s care has been his shelter from birth. Application

Believers may feel different or misunderstood. Like the psalmist, we can accept that our lives may seem strange to others. Our safety does not come from their approval. We can run to God as our strong refuge in every difficulty. When we depend on Him, our lives can also become a quiet witness. People may see our struggles and still notice God’s steady help. The verse encourages us to find our identity and security not in how others perceive us but in God’s unwavering protection.

Reflection

God sees the whole of our lives, from beginning to end. He has been faithful in the past, so we can trust Him now. Being a wonder to many is not something to fear. Our true identity is found in God’s protection, not in human judgment. Let this verse encourage us to rest in the strong refuge who never fails.
