Psalms 72:20

Posted on 18 May at 14:11
Listen to this article

“The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.”

Context:Psalm 72 is attributed to King Solomon and is a prayer for his reign and the establishment of justice, righteousness, and prosperity in Israel. This verse serves as a conclusion to the collection of prayers attributed to David, the son of Jesse, which includes various psalms throughout the Book of Psalms.

  • David’s Prayers:The Book of Psalms contains numerous psalms composed by King David, who is often referred to as a man after God’s own heart. These prayers express a wide range of emotions and experiences, including praise, thanksgiving, confession, lament, and supplication. David’s prayers are known for their honesty, sincerity, and deep trust in God.
  • Completion of David’s Prayers:Psalm 72:20 indicates that the prayers of David, the son of Jesse, have come to an end. This verse marks the conclusion of the collection of psalms attributed to David, not the end of David’s prayers altogether. It signifies the completion of the compilation rather than implying that David ceased praying.
  • A Compilation:The Book of Psalms is a compilation of prayers, poems, and songs that were composed over a long period by various authors, including David, Asaph, Solomon, and others. These psalms were likely collected and organised for liturgical and devotional purposes, offering a rich resource for worship, meditation, and personal reflection.
  • David’s Influence:David’s prayers in the Psalms have had a lasting impact on Jewish and Christian worship throughout history. They have provided comfort, guidance, and inspiration to countless individuals who have sought a deeper relationship with God. The psalms attributed to David reflect his experiences as a shepherd, warrior, fugitive, king, and servant of God.
  • Application:The inclusion of David’s prayers in the Bible reminds us of the importance of prayer in our own lives. Prayer is a means of communicating with God, pouring out our hearts, seeking His guidance, expressing our emotions, and acknowledging our dependence on Him. Like David, we can approach God honestly and sincerely, knowing that He hears and responds to our prayers.
