Psalms 72:19
And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
Psalms 72:19 (KJV)
Context
Psalm 72 is a royal psalm attributed to King Solomon. It is a prayer for the king’s righteous rule, prosperity, and justice. This verse closes the psalm as a doxology, a formal declaration of praise. The psalm looks beyond any earthly king to the Messiah, the promised King who will reign with perfect justice and bring peace to all nations.
Meaning
The first phrase, “And blessed be his glorious name for ever,” is a call to praise God’s name. The Hebrew word for “glorious” is kabod, meaning weighty, honourable, or majestic. It shows that God’s name carries great splendour and worth. To bless His name is to acknowledge His holiness, sovereignty, and eternal worthiness of praise.
The second phrase, “and let the whole earth be filled with his glory,” expresses a longing for God’s presence and power to be seen everywhere. This is not just a hope for individual hearts but for the entire world. When God’s glory fills the earth, righteousness, peace, and worship will cover every nation.
The double “Amen” means “truly” or “so be it.” Repeating it strengthens the affirmation. The psalmist is saying that these words are certain and sure, and he agrees with them wholeheartedly.
Biblical connections
Psalm 72 is a Messianic psalm. It points to Jesus Christ, the ultimate King who perfectly fulfils the prayer for righteous rule. His names are glorious and precious, including Immanuel, meaning “God with us,” and Jesus, meaning “Saviour.” The prayer for the earth to be filled with God’s glory looks forward to the time when Christ’s name and glory will cover the whole earth.
Application
Believers can join this prayer today. We can bless God’s name by living in a way that honours Him. We can pray for His glory to be seen in our families, communities, and nations. Until Christ returns, we are encouraged to keep praying, “Let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen.“
Reflection
This verse calls us to a global vision of God’s reign. It reminds us that God’s glory is not limited to one place or people. As we pray this prayer, we align our hearts with God’s purpose to fill the earth with His presence and majesty.
