Psalms 77:20

Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Psalms 77:20 (KJV)

Psalm 77 is a lament by Asaph, a Levitical singer. He begins in deep distress, feeling that God has turned away. Yet he finds hope by remembering God’s mighty acts in the past. Verse 20 closes the psalm with a climactic reminder of God’s faithful leadership during the Exodus. This verse recalls how God guided Israel through the wilderness, and possibly through the Red Sea, as Isaiah 63:11-13 also remembers.

The verse compares Israel to a flock of sheep. Sheep are vulnerable and completely dependent on their shepherd. Here, God is the true Shepherd who guides, protects, and preserves His people. Moses and Aaron were the human instruments through whom God led. Moses served as the civil leader, while Aaron, his brother, served as the high priest and spokesperson. Both acted under God’s authority, showing that all true leadership comes from Him. God uses human servants to accomplish His purposes, but He remains the ultimate leader.

This shepherding imagery appears throughout Scripture. Isaiah 63:11-13 recalls how God led His people through the sea like a flock, confirming His care during the wilderness journey. In the New Testament, Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd in John 10:11, revealing the ultimate fulfillment of God’s shepherding care. Just as God led Israel, He leads His people through Christ. This verse provides a foundation for understanding God’s shepherding care throughout the Bible.

When we face distress, we can look back at God’s past faithfulness as a source of comfort. The same God who led Israel through the wilderness is leading us today. We can trust His guidance even when His ways are not fully visible. We should also honor the human leaders God raises up, while remembering that He is the true Shepherd behind them. Recognizing and respecting godly leaders helps us follow God more closely.

God’s leadership is both gentle and certain. He knows our weaknesses and provides for our needs. As we follow Him, we can rest in the assurance that He will lead us safely, just as He led His people long ago. Even when His ways are hidden, His care never fails.
