He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.

Context

Psalm 78 is a teaching psalm. Asaph retells Israel’s history so that later generations will remember God’s mighty works and remain faithful. Verse 13 points back to the Exodus, when God led His people out of slavery in Egypt. At that time, the Israelites were trapped between the Red Sea and the pursuing Egyptian army. They had no human way of escape. God acted directly, dividing the sea and making a dry path for them to cross. This event is recorded in Exodus 14, where God, through Moses, parted the waters. The psalmist uses this memory to show that God alone saves His people. The crossing was an act of divine intervention, not human effort; God alone made a way where there seemed to be none.

Meaning

The verse has two clear parts. First, “He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through.” God is the subject of every action. He split the waters and led His people safely across. Second, “he made the waters to stand as an heap.” The waters rose up like walls on both sides, held in place by God’s power. This was not a natural event. It showed God’s complete control over creation. The same God who gathered the waters at creation, as Psalm 33:7 recalls, now held them back to redeem His people. The miracle was a sign of His covenant faithfulness to Israel, fulfilling His promise to deliver them.

Biblical connections

The crossing of the Red Sea is a picture of salvation. In Hebrews 11:29, we read that the Israelites passed through the sea by faith. This event also points forward to a greater deliverance. Just as God made a way through the waters, He provides a way of salvation through Jesus Christ. Believers are freed from the bondage of sin and death, just as Israel was freed from Egypt. The same power that parted the sea works for those who trust in Christ. The imagery of waters standing as a heap echoes God’s creative power, as seen in Genesis 1:9-10, where He separated the waters to reveal dry land.

Application

This verse teaches us to trust in God’s faithfulness. When we face impossible situations, we can remember that God makes a way where there seems to be none. He is able to intervene in our lives with extraordinary power. The Red Sea crossing also reminds us to pass on the account of God’s deeds to the next generation. We should tell our children and others what God has done, so that they too may trust Him. The verse encourages confidence in God’s power to save and His willingness to intervene on behalf of His people.

God’s power is not limited by our circumstances. He who divided the sea can also divide the barriers we face. His salvation is complete, and His faithfulness never fails. Let us remember His mighty works and rest in His ability to save.
