Psalms 80:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:15
Listen to this article

“Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us.”

Historical Context:Psalm 80 is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians in King David’s court and a prominent figure in Israel’s worship. It is a communal lament, expressing the plea of the people of Israel for God’s intervention and restoration.

The primary theme of Psalm 80 is the cry for God’s intervention to restore His people. The psalmist calls upon God to “stir up thy strength” and come to their aid, emphasizing their desperate need for divine deliverance.

Key Themes:

  • a. Restoration and Deliverance:The primary theme of Psalm 80 is the cry for God’s intervention to restore His people. The psalmist calls upon God to “stir up thy strength” and come to their aid, emphasizing their desperate need for divine deliverance.
  • b. Tribal References:The mention of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh in verse 2 points to the twelve tribes of Israel. These tribes were descendants of the sons of Jacob (Israel) and played significant roles in Israel’s history. By mentioning these tribes, the psalmist is symbolically representing the entirety of Israel, calling upon God to save and restore His people as a whole.

Symbolism:

  • a. Ephraim:Ephraim was one of the larger and more powerful tribes of Israel, and its name is often used to represent the northern kingdom of Israel. By mentioning Ephraim, the psalmist acknowledges the distress and suffering of the entire nation.
  • b. Benjamin:Benjamin was a smaller tribe situated close to Jerusalem. The mention of Benjamin suggests a call for God’s intervention in the heart of the land, emphasizing the desperate need for restoration in the central areas of Israel.
  • c. Manasseh:Manasseh was a tribe that settled east of the Jordan River. By including Manasseh, the psalmist is alluding to the plight of those on the periphery, emphasizing the need for God’s salvation to reach all corners of Israel.

Application and Interpretation:

  • a. Personal Application:As individuals, we often encounter situations where we feel overwhelmed and in need of God’s strength and deliverance. This verse encourages us to call upon God, acknowledging our dependency on Him and seeking His saving power.
  • b. Intercessory Prayer:Psalm 80:2 also serves as a reminder to pray for the restoration and well-being of the community around us. We can intercede for our families, churches, cities, and nations, asking God to stir up His strength and bring deliverance and healing to those in need.
  • c. Unity and Compassion:The mention of different tribes highlights the importance of unity and compassion within the community of believers. We should be mindful of the needs of those around us, offering support, love, and prayers for their restoration and well-being.
